Abstract
This article introduces a mystery centered around a man named John Webber in Newport in the years 1765 and 1784. Unfortunately, at least at present, the mystery has not been solved. While certain facts are known, facts that in themselves are intriguing and hint at possible solutions, key evidence is lacking. However, even in the absence of a conclusive solution, the authors believe the mystery is sufficiently interesting to be shared with the readers of Newport History. Also, it is hoped that among that readership, someone may have knowledge of missing facts or perceive new lines of investigation that might lead to an eventual solution.
