Abstract
Charles Peter Beauchamp Jefferys (1898-1980) wrote Newport, 1639-1976; An Historical Sketch during our nation’s bicentennial year. Over three decades later—and just under three decades after the author’s death—the book has just entered its third edition. Deliberately brief in length, intentionally limited in scope, and overtly directed to a more popular than scholarly audience, Jefferys’ “vest pocket” study endures precisely because it responded, and continues to respond, to the need for just such a history of Newport.
