Abstract

The exhibit, A Writer’s Dozen, was displayed in the Newport Historical Society’s Seventh Day Baptist Meeting House from the fall of 2013 through the spring of 2014. The display included all desks from collections storage at the Society; some of these had never been shown before. Included were desks made in Newport by Newport craftsmen and two fine examples from Providence. These desks were all used by Newporters and, in some cases, by generations of Newport families. Many of the traditional Newport desk forms were exhibited, as well as some less common arrangements. The desk is a quintessential form of Newport furniture making.
