Abstract
In its long history Newport has never suffered (nor benefited, depending on your point of view) from a doctor shortage. Even in the 19th century doldrums Newport had plenty of doctors. The Revolutionary War was no exception. As the townspeople were fairly split between Loyalist and Patriot, so were the physicians. There was a doctor for every shade of political and religious opinion. In this article, Browne describes some of the most prominent and influential physicians of the Revolutionary period in Newport.
