Abstract

In this article, Blaine describes the experience of Newporter Willie Bull at Harvard College in 1865. Willie's father Henry was both a farmer and a businessman and his mother had borne at least five children, and while there is little written history about her, it is clear that she was well educated. It is equally clear that both of Willie's parents feared that Willie at College might be trouble. Much of this paper quotes from correspondence relating to Willie's Harvard career.
