Abstract
Unknown to most Americans celebrating the hundredth anniversary of the Brooklyn Bridge in 1983 is the dramatic story which unfolded in Newport the year before the bridge was completed. The principal actors in this off-off Broadway play were Colonel Washington Augustus Roehling, Chief Engineer of the Brooklyn Bridge, his wife, Emily Warren Roehling, and Seth Low, Mayor of the City of Brooklyn. This article recounts Mrs. Roebling's struggle with the Bridge Authority and nicely captures the breadth of her character and the full dimension of her devotion to her husband and as well as to her own ideals.
