Abstract
In October 1982 the Newport Historical Society received from Mrs. Stanley C. Engs of Elk Grove, California, a most generous gift of the papers of the Engs family in Newport. Among them was a collection of letters written between 1835 and 1846 by Catharine Engs Dennis (Mrs. John Dennis) to Mary Robinson Hunter, wife of William Hunter Jr., then U.S. Minister to Brazil. A voluble, occasionally witty correspondent with an eye for the vivid detail, Mrs. Dennis reports events in Newport to her absent friend as well as giving accounts of Mrs. Hunter's friends and relatives.
