Abstract

The three letters printed here are selections from a collection of personal correspondence between Newporter Catharine Engs Dennis and her close friend Mary Robinson Hunter, wife of the U.S. Minister to Brazil. Written between 1835 and 1846, the following letters were chosen as representative of Mrs. Dennis' personal commentary on the public and private events of Newport in her day. She is as shrewd an observer of national politics and local development as she is of marriages, births, deaths, and little scandals with which she regales her absent friend. Her appreciation for detail is truly remarkable.
