Abstract

This piece preserves one of the most popular exhibits ever mounted at the Newport Historical Society. Entitled "The Neighborhoods of Newport," the text and accompanying photographs were the first display of any materials from the Society's ongoing Oral History Project. It seeks not only to record personal reminiscences but also to explore the ways in which the parts of the city work together to form a whole. It includes the testimony of Olive Parsons, Elsie Henry, Bernard Kusinitz, Sarah Niles, John Norman McAskill, Roy Poland, Rita McCarthy, and Gladys Bolhouse. Publication of this piece in Newport History has been undertaken at the enthusiastic urging of Society members. This body of work proves that our fullest comprehension of history comes when we marry intellect with emotion to examine the remembered as well as the distant past.
