Abstract

The Great Depression, struck Newport with unexpected suddenness and force. The stock market crash in October 1929 caught most of Newport by surprise. Very few Newport residents realized the nature and extent of the repercussions which, like the "tidal wave" that followed in the wake of the hurricane of '38, would sweep across the country. This article explores the important transitional period of the Great Depression in Newport. Snydacker makes a fresh evaluation based on the primary records and documents pertaining to how residents of the city fared in this period.
