Abstract
In this article, Karen Zukowski discusses several influential artists in Newport’s history. In the mid-eighteenth century, Newport rivaled that of Boston and Philadelphia as the center of culture in the United States. However, most artist never developed strong connection to the city as many saw Newport as a resort city.
