Abstract

This article describes the life of John Howard Benson, who is fondly remembered by the Newport Historical Society as a contributor to the history and beauty of Newport. He was also on the Society's board of directors from 1934 until his death in 1956. John Howard Benson was a man of virtue. He drew his inspiration from the ideals of the ancients and from the carving traditions of the eighteenth century. At his workshop, The John Stevens Shop, Benson carried on his work in the traditional method of stonecutting.
