Abstract

The scene is Newport. I was resident there from 1925 to 1952. The Vanderbilts, the Astors, and many other families of wealth and renown owned summer cottages down the Avenue and even beyond Bailey’s Beach, which was reserved for only the elite. But among the fashionable residences down the Avenue was a modest two story house with a porch across the front, owned and occupied by Timothy Sullivan and his sister Julia.
