Abstract

This memoir is about growing up on a road named Paradise, in Middletown, Rhode Island, during the years from around 1910 to 1930, just as the world was beginning to change from pastoral to industrial. This road—now called Paradise Avenue but known as Paradise Road when I was young— is the main route through Paradise, the local name for the eastern part of Middletown. My ancestors, the Barkers, were among the early settlers of Paradise in the 1640s.
