  • Plagues and Witches (A Series) by Stephanie L. Wills

    Plagues and Witches (A Series)

    Stephanie L. Wills

The misogyny of the 17th century seen throughout Disquisitionum Magicarum inspired my work. Women were seen as weak and easily susceptible to magical activities. Therefore, women were an easy target for powerful men to cast them out. Even the word “witch” is feminine in nature. I depicted these strong women in my life as taking back the power and embracing this notion of witchcraft which defined the lives of women in the 17th century. Focusing on the stare of my subjects, I am able to create an eye contact between the subject and viewer that invokes a sense of discomfort.
