Abstract

Aristotle, an empiricist, took on the role of visionary in the final book of his Politics. Here, he argued that great emotions within music may resonate with the emotional function of the soul and encourage individuals to strive for virtue (arete) and happiness (eudaimonia). To the extent that this transformation occurs, to that extent the Constitution of Athens will move beyond its now-degenerate state.
