Acculturation Strategies of Cold War and Post-Soviet Immigrants in the United States
Abstract
This research investigates approaches to successfully facilitate acculturation of Russian immigrants into the American mainstream both during the Cold War and after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Primary research methods included interviews with Russian immigrants using a non-probability, snowball sampling technique. Secondary research reviewed scholarly books, autobiographies, journals, and dissertations on the topic of Russian immigrant acculturation. The research found that resilience, educational level, self-sufficiency, English fluency, religious affiliation, and whiteness were the most important contributing factors to successful acculturation. Keywords Acculturation, immigrant, Cold War, Soviet Union, resilience, religious affiliation, whiteness
