Using Philosophy’s Wheels to Drive AI: Creating Synergy to Keep the Human in Human Resources

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (or AI) tools have found their way into every aspect of modern human life including the workplace. One aspect of work where the tools are used is in corporate hiring processes historically curated by human resource departments. Artificial intelligence can be used throughout the hiring process from recruiting, scanning resumes, and interviewing. This interdisciplinary, qualitative study will evaluate the effects of artificial intelligence tools used in hiring. It examines the use of AI in three real corporate workplace examples from publicly available case studies. The thesis of the study is: Is the use of Artificial Intelligence tools alone sufficient in a corporate hiring process or are humans still needed? The purpose of the study is to show that while the tools enhance hiring for corporations making the process easier and more beneficial, humans are still needed to control and audit the process. The discussion is important for the Humanities because it continues the philosophical debates of how computers cannot think like humans; as well as the frame and commonsense knowledge problems with respect to AI. The findings of the study show that it is best when humans and machines work together in a synergistic approach in a corporate hiring process.
